As biomethane production grows rapidly in Lithuania, new export opportunities are opening up – the renewable gas guarantees of origin registry administered by Amber Grid has joined the European ERGaR Hub. This is an international organization that connects renewable gas certificate registries and enables the secure and standardized exchange of these certificates between European countries.
This step will make it easier to export biomethane produced in Lithuania to the German market and to conduct trade more efficiently with some other European countries.
From now on, guarantees of origin issued for Lithuanian biomethane can be transferred electronically to Germany, as well as exchanged with the Danish registry. This allows market participants to carry out cross-border trade in renewable gas more simply, quickly, and transparently.
“Joining the ERGaR Hub opens up new opportunities for Lithuanian biomethane producers to operate in the international market. It creates broader export opportunities for our producers and increases the competitiveness of Lithuanian biomethane globally,” says Nemunas Biknius, CEO of Amber Grid.
This step comes at a particularly favorable time, as the biomethane sector in Lithuania is experiencing rapid growth. At the beginning of 2026, there were 12 biomethane plants operating in the country, with a total capacity of 67 MW, and 5 biomethane injection points have already been installed in the gas transmission system operated by Amber Grid. In January and February alone this year, more than 60 GWh of guarantees of origin were issued for biomethane—2.4 times more than during the same period last year.
The growing supply is driving the expansion of international trade: Lithuanian biomethane is already being exported to the Czech Republic, Spain, the United Kingdom, etc., while imports mainly come from the Netherlands, Denmark, and some other Member States. Joining the ERGaR platform will further expand these opportunities, particularly in Germany, which is one of the largest consumers of green energy in Europe.
Before joining the ERGaR system, Lithuania’s guarantees of origin registry underwent a comprehensive assessment—an audit of processes, regulatory environment, and technical solutions confirmed its compliance with European standards. This ensures smooth and reliable exchange of guarantees of origin between different countries.
Currently, registries from Austria, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom are connected to the ERGaR platform. Lithuania’s participation in this system increases market transparency and expands trading opportunities in the region.
The technical implementation was significantly supported by the guarantees of origin registry service provider European Energy Exchange AG (EEX), with which Amber Grid signed a service agreement in July 2025. This enabled the integration of the registry into the international infrastructure.
