Amber Grid joins the AIB hub: opening up international biomethane trading opportunities

On December 19, the Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB) officially confirmed the connection of the gas transmission system operator Amber Grid to the AIB Hub, which enables the exchange of guarantees of origin for gases produced from renewable energy sources between member states.

This marks another important step by Amber Grid in expanding the biomethane market and creating conditions for market participants to export biomethane produced in Lithuania to international markets, as well as to use biomethane produced in other member states in Lithuania. A significant contribution to the completion of this stage was made by the Finnish guarantees of origin registry service provider Grexel Systems Oy, with whom Amber Grid signed a service agreement in July of this year.

From now on, guarantees of origin issued in Lithuania and recognized internationally under the European Energy Certificate System (EECS) will be transferred via the AIB hub. Membership in the AIB Gas Scheme Group enables the exchange of guarantees of origin between registries of different EU countries, thereby ensuring conditions for biomethane market participants to trade renewable gases across the entire European Union.

“We are pleased to join the AIB hub, which allows for the smooth and efficient transfer and acceptance of EECS guarantees of origin between European countries where harmonized rules apply to their issuance and further use. Our goal is to create the most favorable conditions possible for the export and import of green gases for Lithuanian market participants. The EECS guarantees of origin exchanged in this way ensure transparency and traceability of their movement. Essentially, what has been achieved encourages the development of the biogas business in Lithuania and benefits our country’s economy,” says Nemunas Biknius, CEO of Amber Grid.

On August 28 this year, the AIB approved Amber Grid’s gas sector protocol in Lithuania, and Amber Grid became an official member of the AIB Gas Scheme Group. The protocol sets out the rules for administering guarantees of origin, enabling the issuance of internationally compliant guarantees of origin for gases produced from renewable energy sources, namely EECS guarantees of origin.

As a member of the AIB Gas Scheme Group, Amber Grid can contribute its views on the development of the European gas guarantees of origin system, legal regulation, and other related matters. Other members of the Gas Scheme Group include Spain’s ENAGAS GTS, Austria’s E-Control, Latvia’s Conexus Baltic Grid, Finland’s Gasgrid Finland, the Czech Republic’s OTE, Switzerland’s Pronovo, the Netherlands’ Verticer, and others.

By joining European platforms, Amber Grid strengthens its role in the energy transition and creates more favorable conditions for cross-border trade in sustainable gases.
