Amber Grid, the Lithuanian gas transmission system operator, has signed an EPC contract for the reconstruction of the Elektrėnai gas distribution station. The renovation of the station, which was built in 1962, will ensure the reliability and safety of natural gas transmission and the continued smooth supply of gas to the crucial power generation complex in Elektrėnai.
“In response to the strategic goal of Lithuania to produce all of its electricity domestically, we have decided to invest in the Elektrėnai distribution station, which supplies gas to one of the most important electricity generation facilities. Gas is a crucial energy source when it comes to meeting the needs of the electricity market and the system. In addition, we took into account the current condition of the station and its long service life,” says Laimonas Kučinskas, Technical Director of Amber Grid.
The value of the contracting work is EUR 2.6 million, and the reconstruction of the station will be carried out by the EPC contractor MT Group, which won the public tender. Engineering and construction works are planned to start immediately and the reconstruction of the Elektrėnai gas distribution station site is expected to be completed by mid-2026.
The Elektrėnai gas distribution station will be reconstructed in a new building with advanced and reliable technological equipment. Economical boilers will be installed, using less gas, reducing the environmental impact.
Major emphasis will be placed on upgrading physical security systems and digitised station management. The operation of the gas distribution station will be controlled remotely from the gas transmission system control centre in Vilnius. New gas pressure relief devices, metering devices, automated control, remote data transmission and alarm systems will also be installed. This will reduce the likelihood of accidents and disruptions.
Gas metering and pressure reduction at gas distribution stations to the level required by the distribution system operator. Other important technological processes are also carried out here, such as cleaning the gas of impurities, warming it up and giving it a specific smell for safety purposes.
The Lithuanian gas transmission system operated by Amber Grid consists of nearly 2,300 km of underground gas pipelines, 63 gas distribution stations, 4 gas metering stations and 2 gas compressor stations.
