Amber Grid will upgrade sections of Vilnius - Kaunas gas pipeline for 2.8 million EUR

In continuing the reconstruction of one of Lithuania's most important gas transmission arteries Vilnius-Kaunas gas pipeline, Amber Grid will upgrade almost 4 km of the pipeline in Kaunas and Kaišiadorys districts. Amber Grid has signed a contract worth 2.8 million euros, exclusive of VAT, with Dujotiekio statyba, the contractor who won the public tender.

“The reconstruction of the sections of the gas pipeline between Vilnius and Kaunas is another investment in Lithuania's energy security. We react promptly to the deterioration of parts of the gas transmission network and organise work of upgrading. This is important not only for maintaining the viability of the system, but also for the safety of people. After upgrading these sections in densely populated areas, we will not only improve safety, but will also be able to reduce the requirements for activities near the main gas pipeline“, – says Nemunas Biknius, CEO of Amber Grid.

Sections of Vilnius-Kaunas gas pipeline will be upgraded to ensure the safe and uninterrupted transmission of gas, the safety of people living and working nearby, and to minimise the constraints on operations. The sections to be reconstructed run through the urbanised and commercial areas of Kaunas and Kaišiadorys districts municipalities, that are situated near Neveronys, Martinava and Karčiupis. During the work, a new pipeline and a new pipeline closure system will be installed, and its control will be connected to a SCADA remote data transmission system.

The gas pipeline being rebuilt, which connects two major Lithuanian cities, is part of the Lithuanian gas transmission ring, and is, therefore, important for ensuring gas flows in all directions. After Lithuania has become a regional gas transmission hub, and as the country transports very large volumes of gas, it is important to ensure reliable gas transmission in the direction of the European Union countries, taking into account market needs.

In 2023, Amber Grid upgraded almost 17 km of the gas pipeline sections in Kaunas and Kaišiadorys districts for 13 million euros. After the reconstruction of the gas pipeline sections, the safety of the gas pipeline has been increased and the conditions for the development of activities close to the main gas pipeline have been improved.
