Amber Grid, the Lithuanian gas transmission system operator, has launched a tender for the upgrade of two gas distribution stations in Šiauliai and Telšiai in western Lithuania. The main purpose of these facilities is gas metering and reduction of gas pressure to the level required by the distribution system operator. The station also carries out other important technological processes such as gas cleaning, warming and odorization, i.e., odorization for safety purposes.
The project to upgrade the Šiauliai and Telšiai gas distribution stations continues the long-term upgrade programme of the Amber Grid system, to which the gas distribution network operated by Energijos skirstymo operatorius (ESO) and the large users of the gas transmission system are connected. The programme will replace decades-old equipment at the stations with modern equipment that meets the highest environmental, efficiency and safety standards.
The project is being implemented following the approval last year of EU support for the modernisation of these stations. The planned investments for the project will be finalised when the contract is signed with the successful tenderer in October this year. The whole project is expected to be completed by mid-2023.
“We are organising the public procurement of major works on the basis of a cost-effectiveness assessment system. The choice of the contractor will be determined not only by the price of the works, but also by the duration of the guarantee obligations and other conditions. Although the market of contractors operating in the Lithuanian gas sector is not very wide, we aim to maximise competition,” says Andrius Dagys, Technical Director of Amber Grid.
The winner of the public tender for the contract will upgrade the technological equipment of the both gas distribution stations, construct new buildings and clean up the environment. The Telšiai and Šiauliai gas distribution stations will be equipped with economical boilers that use less gas and will reduce emissions into the environment. New gas pressure relief devices, metering devices, automated control, remote data transmission, alarm systems will also be installed. This will reduce the possibility of accidents and disruptions. The Lithuanian gas transmission system operated by Amber Grid consists of more than two thousand kilometres of underground gas pipelines, 65 gas distribution stations, three gas metering stations and two compressor stations.
